I had to come and have a look at this new venture. It'll be interesting to see if anyone uses it. It seems like a good idea, although, being a natural cynic, I suspect it's a business venture and someone somewhere is hoping to make a lot of money through advertising on here... I can live with that, as long as the ads are not too obtrusive.
I live in Rogiet, obviously. We've lived here for twenty years. Pleased to see they're building the new school.. it seems to be a flat-pack school made of chipboard, but it'll probably look all right when it's finished. As long as the Village Idiots don't use the windows for golf practice like they did before.
I started LangstoneVillage.co.uk (http://www.LangstoneVillage.co.uk) as a purely personal venture as I felt the area lacked any sense of community spirit (been living there size 2000). The site proved very popular and I had many requests to create similar sites for other local communities.
Sure, it would be nice to make a profit from advertising, but as long as I can cover my costs and a reasonable return for my time then I'll continue to run these sites.
I do hope you all make use of this site and it helps towards building some community spirit in the area.

Hi,
Did it work? As a way of generating community spirit, I mean?
I think it's a good idea, it could be useful in a lot of ways, local events, local crime, almost anything. IF people use it, or feel inclined to make use of it.
We had a leaflet through the door, that's what brought me here. I didn't know it existed before that. I thought a few more people might have looked in.

Yes, I believe it has. I've personally got to know people in the area I'd otherwise probably wouldn't have. It's certainly has helped to boost local events (http://www.langstonevillage.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18210 (http://www.langstonevillage.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18210)) and definitely provided a platform for discussing local issues (http://www.langstonevillage.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2)

The aim is for each site to cover a small area. This site covers almost 4,000 households so we wouldn't expect membership to be huge. Don't forget, the majority of visitors to any forum are unregistered. Many will return many times but refrain from making any posts.
As said, I'm running this at my own time and cost but hopefully advertising revenue will help minimize this. The more advertisers subscribe then the more I'll be able to promote the site.

I'm in Rogiet too - I've been here since the early 90s but have known the area all my life. I also came to this forum from a leaflet being put through my letterbox.
Village idiots? Yes, rife in Rogiet, sadly. I think it will be a difficult, if not impossible, task to encourage any kind of community spirit here.....

I have to say the situation regarding Village Idiots has improved to some extent in the last year... but they're still around, unfortunately.
I've noticed over the years that it's an on-going problem, the last generation of Village Idiots grow up, (hopefully), and move on to other amusements.. but in the meantime the next lot start showing up, hanging around and eventually pushing to see how much they can get away with.
I think community spirit has slowly declined with the passing of the older generations in Rogiet.
there's villiage idiots whereever you live -i've lived in towns and cities and it's the same wherever you go.
my partner and I only moved here 6 months ago, but we've had mostly positive experiences and everyone says hello! :D

Hi Rachel, Welcome to the forum; indeed, people generally do say hello if you pass them in the street; I have lived in other towns and villages too and I am sure that village idiots exist everywhere - however when you start to get on in years you begin to feel threatened by such anti-social behaviour.
