Hi there,
My family is due to move down from Scotland in just under two weeks time. As I am in the Armed Forces any medical treatments I need are catered for but what is the routine for them applying to be patients of a local dentist, and doctors for that matter, locally?
It would just be my wife and daughter as my son gets treatment at Stirling Uni where he is studying. My daughter has just had "train-tracks" fitted in Glasgow so we are concerned that if she has any problems we need to be able to get her seen sooner rather than later!
Hopefully someone can let us know as it would be one less thing to worry about during the build up to the move !!
Many thanks in advance.

As far as dentists go you just telephone to make an appointment to register with them. Some NHS dentists now have waiting lists due to a lack of funding from the Local Health Board. If you have gum disease it is actually cheaper to be seen privately than it is on the NHS.
The orthodontist your wife has had treatment with may know an orthodontist locally that they can contact or make an appointment with a dentist to get a referral. You can contact an orthodontist directly but i am not sure how you would be covered financially as it may be private treatment that they provide. Sadly each country have different protocols.
As far as doctors are concerned i am not sure. You need an NHS card to register with a doctor and i think the local health authority has to sort that out for you. I am sure if you speak to the local doctors practice they can give you better advice on what to do as things may have changed.
Good luck with the move

Hi HND,
Many thanks for the prompt reply. Yes your right, each and every corner of the UK seems to have different rules for just about everything!! House buying, doctors, dentist, bank holidays, public holidays, bus passes..... everything !! Thankfully a glass of Merlot is a glass of Merlot, worldwide !!
I think my wifes only concern about our daughter was that the braces have only just been fitted and maybe that a local dentist would not take on a "young person" as they do not get paid for treating them (??? Don't ask me..I just drive off to nearest base and get treated !!)
Anyway, once we are down we will wander around and call in at the local surgeries to see what can be done.
Thanks again.....I may have more "silly" questions as I think of them this week !!!

Your daughter will be able to register with NHS dentist no problem at all and it may be that they will then refer her to an orthodontist for you.

Great stuff. So as we are moving to magor it would make sense to take her to the address above?
Thanks again for your help.
