I have heard tonight that the Roggiett Hotel has been sold at auction for ?180,000. That's just about what my own house is worth!
I wonder what will become of this lovely old building? Hopefully not the same fate that befell Francesca's?

The owners decided against redeveloping it themselves then. Am i right in thinking they had problems with planning permission for flats?

no idea - it's just such a pity that a thriving hotel was effectively destroyed by one greedy bugger who deservedly got his fingers burnt in the end.

The rumour-mongers are rife at the moment. The latest I hear is that a syndicate of Asians have bought the Roggiett Hotel with the intention of turning it into an Indian Restaurant. As a curry addict I find this news heartening particularly that the building will survive and not be destroyed to make way for rabbit hutches!

Let?s just hope that it will be transformed into a decent establishment that the community of Rogiet will be able to enjoy for years to come.
Will they decide to keep the original bar if it does re-open as a restaurant?
I can definitely say I would rather drink a proper pint of Welsh ale in the company of friends and family at the Roggiett Hotel!:)

Couldn't agree more - we need a decent place in the village in which to socialise over a pint or two. There isn't anywhere apart from the Club, and who in their right mind wants to go there and be subjected to the verbal abuse which comes across the bar ....

Well i'm afraid I would have to agree with you there Annie, another reason why I relinquished my membership.
A cheap pint is great! but the wrong type of atmosphere unfortunately
but nobody's perfect.

the latest rumour is that the auction sale to the Asians fell through and that it has been sold again....but who knows....?
i hear it's been bought by some people who own another pub, maybe we will get social space back?
or else it'll be knocked down for housing :(

It would be awful if it was pulled down; we have so little left of the "old" buildings in the village.
It would be nice to think it will be re-opened as a pub. It's very much needed, there being no other real alternative watering hole.....
i agree completely! we moved to the village in November and whilst we say hi to people and have made friends with the people who live opposite - we haven't really made more connections. So a village pub would be lovely!

There used to be a tremendous "Community Spirit" here in the 50s and 60s, which does not appear to exist now. Back then, of course, mothers stayed at home and looked after the house and family, fathers worked on the railway, all the children went to the village school and everyone knew each other.
With the right landlord in place the Roggiett Hotel could once again become the hub of the community.
It would be nice to think it could happen again, but just recently two people have said to me that it's far too late for the old building and it will never re-open as a Hotel.
It makes you wonder whether the people whose job it is to oversee village matters really care at all...?

Just to throw my two penneth into the ring.....we looked into buying a house in Rogiet but eventually plumped on Magor mainly due to the lack of social facilities for both us and our daughter. We have now been here a week and already enjoy a pint at either of the two pubs, and friendly chat with a few of the locals. The village we moved from in Scotland also had two local pubs.....maybe it's us !!!!!!!

Haven't been down that way for a while to see what's going on, and haven't even heard any rumours lately of what might be happening. I wonder if anyone knows?

I went passed it on the bus one Friday and noticed they (whoever they are?) were charging to use the car park ???
Doesn't seem to be much else happening down there...shame really.
